With more than 20 years experience in direct response marketing, Mr. Agurcia has held key positions at large multinational, Fortune 500 companies including Sony, CBS and KPMG. He founded Omni Direct in 1999 with the vision of providing high integrity marketing and media services targeting the emerging Hispanic market. In the past decade, Mr. Agurcia has built Omni Direct into a leading U.S. Hispanic direct response marketing firm. The company – sought after by businesses nationwide looking to penetrate the U.S. Hispanic direct response market – provides turnkey solutions that merge Fortune 100-level brand-centric marketing with leading-edge DR sales expertise.
Prior to Omni Direct, Mr. Agurcia served for two years as Consultant to leading direct response marketer Gunthy-Renker’s Executive Committee, and was responsible for developing and executing new product categories and Latin American operations. He was also CEO of Gold Coast Media, responsible for spearheading the company’s tremendous growth in the direct marketing infomercial business.
Based in Miami Beach, Mr. Agurcia has maintained a close relationship with Miami Dade College. In 2009 he was instrumental in developing the Alex Agurcia Scholarship Endowment Fund, which was created to finance and support need-based tuition scholarships for degree-seeking students.
His induction to the Alumni Hall of Fame will put him on the map with a long list of luminaries. Past honorees include actor Andy Garcia, former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, music industry mogul Emilio Estefan, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz, and United States Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen, among others.
“Mr. Agurcia is proof that a solid education opens doors and creates great career opportunities,” noted Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, MDC president. “The Alumni Hall of Fame is honored to add his name to the group of successful individuals we celebrate each year. The work he has done both in our community and nationwide has made the school very proud.”
Aside from Mr. Agurcia’s professional accomplishments, the MDC selection committee was also impressed by his lifelong commitment to community service organizations in and around the Miami area. He has volunteered his time as a mentor for Big Brothers, a skipper for Shake-a-Leg Miami, a team-in-training coach for the Leukemia Society, a volunteer builder for Living Instruments for Others (LIFO), and a sponsor for SOS Children’s Orphanages. He is also an accomplished athlete, having competed in over 30 marathons and over 100 triathlons around the world, including the Ironman Race, which includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike 26.2 mile marathon.
“Miami Dade College played a significant role in shaping my career and propelling me into the world of marketing and advertising, and I continue to remain involved with the school’s initiatives, at many levels,” said Mr. Agurcia. “I am grateful to have been chosen for this year’s Alumni Hall of Fame, and honored to be added to a list of so many industry leaders.”
The MDC Alumni Hall of Fame is a spring tradition that has been in place since 2003. Approximately 20-30 honorees are selected annually, and this year marks a particularly important occasion, as the college will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. With more than 170,000 current students, MDC is the largest institution of higher learning in the US, boasting 1.7 million people served since its establishment.
Mr. Agurcia, along with 28 other inductees, will be honored on April 22, 2010 at a dinner gala hosted by the college at the Hilton Miami Downtown.
